Tramp oil: why removing it extends the cutting fluid's life

Tramp oil is the foreign oil that accumulates in the cutting-fluid tank: way oil, hydraulic and lubrication oil that leaks from the machine and floats on the emulsion. By forming a film on the surface, it blocks the air exchange with the bath, creating the oxygen-free environment in which anaerobic bacteria proliferate, and that is where the characteristic odor of degraded fluid comes from.

Beyond the odor, tramp oil reduces cooling, contaminates the part, increases biocide consumption and brings forward the change of the charge, which has a double cost: the new fluid and the disposal of the used one. Removing it regularly with a skimmer keeps the emulsion stable, reduces odors and significantly extends the bath life.
